Luke Fickell Announces Walt Stewart is Taking Over as UC's Defensive Line Coach

Stewart was a standout player at Cincinnati from 2008-12.

CINCINNATI — Luke Fickell confirmed to the media on Thursday that Walt Stewart is taking over the program's open defensive line coaching position. Cincinnati just hired Stewart as an outside linebackers coach, but he gets the promotion after Greg Scruggs left for an assistant defensive line position with the New York Jets.

Stewart's previously coached at Temple as the Owls' defensive line coach since 2019. In 2018, Stewart coached the defensive line at NIU for one season under head coach Rod Carey. In 2016 and 2017, he coached the defensive line at Eastern Kentucky.

Stewart was a standout interior defensive presence at Cincinnati from 2008-12.

He racked up 185 tackles and 17.5 sacks across his time in Clifton and was named the team’s most outstanding defensive lineman in 2012. The two-time team captain won four Big East Championships and made four bowl games across his UC career, including the 2009 Allstate Sugar Bowl and 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl.
