Quarterbacks Bo Nix, Kedon Slovis entering Transfer Portal, Bearcats' Options Grow

The pile of big-name quarterbacks is bountiful if UC wants to dive in.

CINCINNATI — The brigade of big-name quarterbacks in the transfer portal keeps growing. USC's Kedon Slovis and Auburn's Bo Nix recently announced they are looking at other schools.

Yahoo! Sports Pete Thamel reported the Slovis news amidst new USC head coach Lincoln Riley's transition from Oklahoma to Los Angeles. Slovis has played three seasons at USC and struggled after bursting onto the scene in 2019.

He threw 30 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2019 on 8.9 yards per attempt. Since then, Slovis has thrown 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over the past two years. Freshman Jaxson Dart filled in well for Slovis when the latter went down with a leg injury this year. Dart's play paired with the No. 2 player in the 2023 class, QB Malachi Nelson, flipping to USC left little room for a veteran like Slovis.

Nix announced his decision to leave Auburn as a grad transfer over the weekend. Unlike Slovis, Nix struggled over his first two seasons but is coming off career-best marks in passer rating (130), completion rate (61%), yards per attempt (7.1), and sacks taken (13).

Nix was the No. 2 quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class, and the guy above him is also looking elsewhere. Names like Spencer Rattler, Dillon Gabriel, Max Johnson, Myles Brennan, Michael Penix Jr., Zach Calzada, and Jack Sears are all looking for new homes alongside Slovis and Nix.

Redshirt Freshman Evan Prater has all the talent to be the next great UC quarterback, but he's a complete question mark. The Bearcats should be one of the most desirable QB landing spots in the country. They are on a historic regular-season unbeaten streak, and they play in an ideal league for transfers.

Any one of these players could step in and be the best quarterback in the American Athletic Conference. Time will tell if the Bearcats make a play for a veteran quarterback, but the reward outweighs the risk more and more each day.
