Report: Big 12 'Opening Talks' with ESPN and FOX on new TV Deal

CINCINNATI — The Big 12 is eager to get their next TV deal negotiated earlier than expected. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the league has engaged in discussions with ESPN and FOX.
"The imminent opening of these conversations is significant," Thamel wrote. "As they come more than a year and a half before the league's television contract calls for a formal, exclusive negotiating window with both current partners. This development allows the Big 12, which has a contract through the 2024 football season, to potentially get tangible future revenue numbers for both its member schools and potential additions."
"The conversations could lead to contract negotiations on an extension, which would be a distinct advantage for the Big 12 as it navigates this uncertain moment in college sports."
This is big news because the PAC-12 is currently in formal negotiations for a new deal. That means they can give current potential new members hard numbers as to what they will earn in TV revenue by joining the league.
Now, the Big 12 could soon have that same tool to offer new members, even though they weren't expected to open formal negotiations until 2024.
"It means that this conference is no longer going to be stagnant," Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark recently told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal about being open for business. "We're going to be very proactive. We're going to explore and identify any and all opportunities that create value in every respect. Is expansion a part of 'open for business'? A hundred percent. But it's only a small piece."
Yormark just started in the role and he's not letting the Big 12 watch from the sidelines.
