Javon Bardwell Decommits From Kansas: How It Affects Jayhawks’ 2027 Class

When highly touted prospect Javon Bardwell committed to Kansas last October, he was thought to be a monumental addition to the Jayhawks' 2027 class. However, it appears that the Overtime Elite product won't be playing any games in the crimson and blue after all.

On Wednesday evening, On3's Joe Tipton reported that Bardwell would be backing out of his pledge to KU and immediately reclassifying to play in the upcoming season. This brings Bill Self's 2027 recruiting class back to square one without a commit.

How Does Javon Bardwell Decommitting Affect Kansas?

A consensus 5-star prospect, Bardwell is the No. 16 player and No. 5-ranked small forward in the country, according to 247 Sports. Those rankings are before Bardwell officially announced his reclassification.

Thankfully, it is only August, and Kansas isn't the only school that's still scouting several players across the country. That doesn't change the fact that the program lost a tremendous talent who could have developed into a special Jayhawk.

"This decision is not a reflection of the coaches at the University of Kansas," Bardwell wrote in a statement. "To Coach Bill Self, Coach Tony Bland, and Coach Jeremy Case, I want to thank you for the relationship you built with my family and me from day one. My recruitment is now open as a member of the 2026 class."

Bardwell competed with the Overtime Elite squad RWE during the 2025-26 season alongside fellow KU guard Taylen Kinney. Across 14 contests, he averaged 17.9 points and 6.8 rebounds on 44.4% shooting from the field, along with a 20.7-point scoring average for Compton Magic on the AAU circuit this summer.

Assistant coach Tony Bland was responsible for spearheading his Kansas recruitment, and there didn't seem to be any possibility of losing him until now. Based on his statement, Bardwell's future plans do not include KU, as he appears to be moving on from the program altogether.

Bardwell chose the Jayhawks over Louisville, USC, and Texas in his initial recruitment, meaning one or several of those schools could be in the mix as he prepares for the upcoming season.

The Harlem, New York native was considered a potential Tyran Stokes alternative had he chosen Kentucky over KU in his recruitment. Bardwell was clearly looking for an opportunity to play right away at the Division I level, something the Jayhawks could not necessarily offer with Stokes leading the small forward position.

Given his status as a 5-star prospect, Bardwell should receive no shortage of attention from programs across the country. However, he may find it difficult to secure immediate playing time at a program in a similar tier as Kansas.
