Ohio State and Clemson entered the Fiesta Bowl unbeaten with each side featuring star talent on both sides of the ball. This matchup did not disappoint with the Tigers prevailing 29-23 to advance to the National Championship on January 13 against LSU. The Buckeyes stormed out to a 16-0 lead that could have been larger if not for a couple missed opportunities in the red zone. However, Clemson gained momentum in the second quarter after Ohio State defensive back Shaun Wade was ejected for targeting Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence on 4th down. Touchdown runs by Travis Etienne and Lawrence cut the deficit to just two points at the half. A penalty cost Ohio State again in the third quarter, this time for roughing the punter. Moments later, Clemson took a 21-16 lead on an Etienne 54-yard TD catch and run. While the replay booth overturned and Ohio State scoop-and-score, the Buckeyes eventually took the lead in the fourth quarter on a Chris Olave 23-yard pass from Justin Fields. But Lawrence and Clemson would not be denied as Lawrence found Etienne again for a 34-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes remaining. While Ohio State drove deep on the ensuing drive, Clemson safety Nolan Turner intercepted Fields in the end zone to seal the win for the Tigers. J.K. Dobbins finished with 174 rush yards on 18 carries to surpass 2,000 yards this season, breaking Eddie George’s school rushing record. With Clemson getting a shot to defend its national title against top-ranked LSU, SI’s Robin Lundberg unpacks the Fiesta Bowl and looks ahead to the heavyweight title bout on January 13.
