CNN confused Ex-NBA player Steve Smith for ESPN's Stephen A. Smith

Monday September 8th, 2014

Steve Smith is a common name. According to this website which may or may not be correct, there are 22,046 people named Steve, Steven or Stephen Smith in the United States. So it's tough to blame CNN for confusing former Hawks guard Steve Smith for current ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, especially when one is on TV every day and the other hasn't played in the NBA in almost ten years.

CNN invited Steve Smith on to talk about Hawks owner Bruce Levenson's racist email, but they thought they were talking to Stephen A. Smith. Oops.

MANNIX: What's Bruce Levenson's real motivation for selling the Hawks?

Smith did a good job brushing the confusion off. Ravens receiver Steve Smith probably would not have been as composed.
