Alex Ovechkin was scrolling through Instagram recently when he noticed a fan had left his phone number in the comments of a post, along with the directive "Call," so the Washington Capitals star followed through, only to get the fan's voicemail.

Ovechkin left a voicemail explaining to the fan, 20-year-old CJ Grinnell, that he had missed his big chance, and then posted a video of the call to Instagram so Grinnell would know he was not being pranked.

The Washington Post got in touch with Grinnell, who plays minor league hockey for the East Coast Wizards of the Eastern Hockey League, to talk about his brush with greatness.

"You never want to miss a call from someone like Alex Ovechkin. I just didn’t think he’d actually call….I was getting calls til 2 am last night. We’re all hockey fans, and no one can fathom the fact that Ovi called. It’s still hard to comprehend.”

While he may not have gotten the opportunity to chat with Ovechkin, Grinnell says he will always keep the voicemail as a reminder of the close call.
