Sauce Gardner, Darrelle Revis Trade Barbs With Asante Samuel on Twitter

Former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel has drawn the ire of two Jets standouts at the same position.

Samuel made the questionable claim that soon-to-be Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis and reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner are overrated because of New York media coverage.

The retired 42-year-old Samuel, who won two Super Bowls with the Patriots and later played for the Eagles and Falcons, took issue with a ranking of the NFL’s top active cornerbacks conducted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. After polling players, coaches, scouts and executives, Fowler identified Gardner as the second-best corner in the league behind the Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II.

Apparently Samuel, father of Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., didn’t agree that Gardner should be ranked that high.

“The New York media will take your career to another level,” the elder Samuel tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

It didn’t take Gardner long to respond.

“The tweet literally says those were the cornerback rankings by PLAYERS, EXECUTIVES, SCOUTS, & COACHES… I’m trynna figure out why you keep bringing up NY Media🤣🤣🤣”

Revis, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the coming weeks, then joined the fray to tweak Samuel and stick up for Gardner.

“I really don’t know much about this guy. never was inspired to watch his film but something does jog my memory,” Revis tweeted. “I do remember we played Falcons + Rex Ryan made a highlight clip of him being doubled moved on almost every single route.

“I recall Rex saying to receivers in our weekly team meetings. The game plan was if he line up across from you, double move him every time. So in practice our receivers referred to him as the “DOUBLE MOVE KING”. 🤣 I never viewed him more than what was said about him in the scouting report. 🤣.“

The Jets’ social media team subsequently joined the conversation to jab Samuel with an image of the cast of The Sopranos in full Jets apparel.
