With an Average Draft Position of 62nd and as the 20th pitcher coming off fantasy baseball draft boards , Cubs’ pitcher Yu Darvish offers great value as a team’s SP2. Darvish started off slow in 2019 but finished strong thanks to a 2.95 ERA, 0.826 WHIP, and 124 Ks over 88.1 innings. Sports Illustrated’s fantasy baseball analysts Ben Heisler and Shawn Childs discuss Darvish’s ADP in the attached video.

Bill Enright: Our fantasy baseball player outlook continues at Sports Illustrated. We're taking a look at Chicago Cubs right Yu Darvish. Let's bring on the experts. Ben Heisler and Shawn Childs, who cover fantasy baseball for Sports Illustrated. Shawn, I'm going to go to you first. Talk to me about Darvish.

Shawn Childs: Yeah, kind of interesting season, similar to Jack Flaherty, where the first half of the year he struggled all close to a 5.00 ERA, really struggled with home runs, 1.8 per 9. But over the last three months of the year he really put it together, a 2.95 ERA, 124 strikeouts in 88.1 innings, which was a result of walking only seven guys in the second half of the year, compared to 49 over the first half. So it's all about throwing strikes with him. And last year, though, all the other problem he really had, he struggled to get wins. He had a stretch of 13 straight starts where he didn't have a victory. So he should bounce back in that area. And it's all about command with him. He has the talent. It's just got to throw strikes in. He had a couple of injuries come over the previous couple season, but he looks like he's trending forward. He looks very attractive this year.

Bill Enright: Ben, I'll go back to you. What do you expect to see from the Chicago Cubs righty.

Ben Heisler: I expect a bounce back season as well, if you're looking at the sort of the tale of two halves. You have a bad Yu Darvish, which really extends all the way back to the 2017 World Series when you got tattooed by the Houston Astros, of course, we ended up learning that they were stealing signs. But you thought he was tipping pitches, had a terrible 2018 with the Cubs where he only pitched in, I believe, eight or nine games. And then the first 17 starts of his 2019 season, he had and ERA around 5.00. But as Shawn mentioned, he really turned it around because his location came back. There's so much natural movement on the Yu Darvish fastball and he gets it up between 95-96 miles per hour that I think he's in an outstanding position if the control comes back and again, the shortened season with a lot of mileage on that arm. I think if the control is there for Darvish, he should be partly the elite level starter that we came to expect from him out of the second half of last season.

Bill Enright: Ben and Shawn, great insight as always, for more fantasy baseball player analysis, check out everything we have on the Chicago Cubs and all 30 MLB teams at SI.com/fantasy.
