Palos Verdes football stuns Edison with game-winning field goal
PALOS VERDES, CALIF. — When asked if Dylan Freebury was nervous, his response was quick and to the point.
"No," he said with a smile.
The Palos Verdes kicker made a 27-yard field goal with one second left to stun Edison 31-28 at home Friday afternoon to keep the Sea Kings unbeaten at 4-0.
Edison (1-2) had one play from scrimmage on the ensuing possession, but the pass down field was incomplete and the Palos Verdes celebration ensued.
Freshman quarterback Ryan Rakowski remains unbeaten as a starter after throwing for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 15 passing. Senior wideout Luke Gayton had seven catches for 79 yards, including both scoring passes.
"The most impressive thing about (Ryan) is how competitive he is," Palos Verdes coach Guy Gardner said of Rakowski, who's just 5-foot-8, 160 pounds.
"He's tough, too," Gardner added.
Toughness sums up Palos Verdes (4-0). Senior running back tandem of Eric Mulkey and Hobbs Brannan combined for 150 yards rushing. Most of Mulkey and Brannan's carries were hard earned, fighting for extra yards and stretching for first-down markers.
Mulkey ran for 100 yards himself and two touchdowns.
Edison quarterback Save Niumata threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Wideout Mason York caught four passes for 77 yards, including an 83-yard touchdown reception.
