Chris Johnson commits to Texas Longhorns

The Montverde Academy four-star point guard chose the Longhorns over Arkansas and Washington

Montverde Academy (Florida) four-star point guard Chris Johnson announced his commitment to the Texas Longhorns on Monday.

The 6-foot-4 senior guard is from Missouri City, Texas but originally committed to the Kansas Jayhawks in August.

Last week, Johnson requested a release from his National Letter of Intent with Kansas and named his top three schools as Arkansas, Texas and Washington.

With the addition of Johnson, Texas' 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 33 in the country per On3. Johnson is the only high school prospect joining the Longhorns' roster this upcoming season with the four other prospects coming through the transfer portal. Virginia big man Kadin Shedrick and Oral Roberts point guard Max Abmas are the biggest portal additions.

The Longhorns also had two elite high school prospects decommit to the program earlier this year: Ron Holland and A.J. Johnson

Chris Johnson is currently ranked as the nation's No. 53 overall prospect in the class of 2023, No. 13 point guard and Florida's No. 3 overall recruit.

Here's what On3's National Recruiting Analyst Jamie Shaw had to say about Johnson:

“Chris Johnson is a paint touch point guard with great size. He has a quick first-step into the paint and the IQ to make a read with what the defense gives him. The jump shot is a question mark, as his release can inconsistent. However, with he showed confidence this summer with one and two dribble pull ups in the mid range. He has the capability to be a good point of attack defender, with good size, length, and some quick-Twitch. There is a sense of toughness there and as long as he stays focused, there are a lot of tools to build on. The jump shot will need to be ironed out, but he does a lot of things you want a PG to do.”
