Angels News: Halos Pitcher Hopeful All Star Break Will Help Get Halos Back on Track

In this story:

The last few weeks have been brutal for the Los Angeles Angels. Not only have they dropped nine of their last 10 games overall but they keep losing players to injury. The team has seen Mike Trout, Brandon Drury, Zach Neto. Gio Urshela, Anthony Rendon, Jo Adell and even Shohei Ohtani leave games with injuries of late. It has been a major reason to why they have dropped below .500 for the first time since April.

Just a few short weeks ago, the Angels were rolling. They seemed like they could finally reach the postseason and then everything changed. But even before some of the bigger injuries, the team started to fall off. The magic from May and June started to wear off and the injuries have just pilled on since.

As the team heads into the All-Star break, they are hoping for a change. Something needs to change and quickly for this team if they want to make any sort of run to the postseason. Pitcher Reid Detmers is hoping that the time off will allow the team to heal a little and regroup.

“We need a break. We just need to get our heads right,” said Detmers, who gave up seven runs in just 3⅓ innings. “Hopefully this break will get us back and get us back to winning. Obviously, we’re down right now. We got a lot of guys hurt, lost another guy tonight (Jo Adell to an oblique injury), which sucks. But at the same time, the guys we do have, we got to put our heads down and keep going.”

For their sake, the franchise is hoping that it works. They only have a few weeks left until the trade deadline so they will need to decide quickly which route they want to go down. Trout is going to be out for an extended period of time and even as great as Ohtani is, can he elevate this team by himself?

Plus speaking about Ohtani, he is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season. That has to be weighing on this franchise because they still haven't touched the postseason with him on the roster. Many believe that he will leave them after the year ends so it would be wise to trade him to avoid losing the best player in baseball for nothing. But the Angels have signaled that they don't intend to move him.

It's a tough situation to be in but it's the next man up mentality. Their manager Phil Nevin isn't blaming the injuries and knows the team needs to step up. If they don't, it'll be another familiar season for the Halos and a major disappointment at that.

“We’ve had our share of injuries, but we have not played well. We’re better than this,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said.
