This is definitely not what the Los Angeles Angels wanted to hear right before their second freeway series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are in the middle of one of their best stretches all season as they took home four straight series win and now will try to take at least one game at home against the Boys in Blue.

However, they will have to do so once again without one of their top infielders and batters in Gio Urshela and it looks like they may not see him on the field for the rest of the season. He suffered a pelvic fracture about a week ago now during a huge game against the Texas Rangers when he made a run for first base and took an awkward step.

It was originally hoped that his IL stint would not be too long and that he'd able to rejoin the squad ASAP to help them continue their 2023 playoff push. However, it appears that his recovery is much more complicated than they initially thought and The Athletic's Sam Blum shared some heartbreaking news about his new timetable.

"Gio Urshela is going to be out for the season. He doesn’t need surgery, which is good news. But the recovery process is still long."

LA will now have some big decisions to make moving forward as they will have to fill his void. In 62 games with the Halos this year, Urshela was putting together a solid campaign as he was slashing .299/.329/.374 and two homers as he helped the Angels continue to compete in the AL West.

For the meantime, Michael Stefanic had been called up to replace Urshela in the lineup while he was in the IL so we'll have to see if the Halos decide to keep him in that place.

Urshela will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024 so he probably lost himself some money through this but we wish him nothing but a smooth recovery moving forward.
