Los Angeles Angels left fielder Taylor Ward underwent reconstructive surgery on his face on Friday, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger.

The procedure comes after Ward was hit in the face by a pitch in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday, July 29.

Ward was transferred to the 60-day injured list the day after the injury, effectively ending his season.

The hit by pitch was a terrible development for Ward, who was having one of his best seasons in the majors.

He was hitting .253/.335/.421 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI, and also played an every day role for an Angels team that's trying to make the postseason for the first time since 2014.

Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah, who hit Ward last week, was remorseful after the game, telling media

“That’s probably the worst feeling ever. I’m definitely going to pray for him and his family. That’s the last thing you want to do, no matter the situation, no matter the team, anything." (via Keegan Matheson)

Ward also received support from teammates, as Angels third baseman Mike Moustakas expressed concern for the left fielder after the game.

So now the Angels will have to move forward without Ward in their attempt to make the playoffs.

The Halos' winning ways have tapered out of late, as they've lost their last four games to fall to five and a half games back in the chase for the final wild card spot.

As for Ward, we hope his recovery goes well and he'll be able to get back to contributing for the Angels in the future.
