Houston Astros Resigned to Losing Bregman Next Offseason
The Houston Astros have one of the best cores of position players in baseball. From Jose Altuve to Yordan Alvarez to Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, these players are what have kept the Astros in contention for a World Series season in and season out.
However, Houston may be without one of their most beloved players following the conclusion of next season.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Astros have resigned themselves to losing him next winter.
"The Houston Astros have no interest in trading third baseman Alex Bregman, but have privately resigned to losing him in free agency in a year, realizing it may take $300 million to keep him. The money they’ll spend is making sure that Jose Altuve stays with the Astros for life," writes Nightengale.
Interestingly enough, the Astros don't want to trade Bregman but know they won't re-sign him. That is a sign that Houston believes they have a real shot at winning the division and another World Series in 2024. Which they do and makes sense you want to hold on to your veteran third baseman.
But the fact that owner Jim Crane, who has filled his war chest over the years with multiple World Series championships and deep postseason runs is consistently taking issue with doling out large contracts is an entirely different matter.
Yes, Altuve must be prioritized when it comes to keeping him an Astro for life. But Bregman will earn a massive contract and rightfully so. For Houston to resign themselves to losing him because of money speaks volumes about where this organization stands and where it could be heading.
