José Abreu signed a lucrative three-year, $58.5 million contract to help bolster the Houston Astros’ offense.

While Abreu has yet to hit his first home run in an Astros uniform, he’s starting to break out of his mini slump.

That’s great news for the Astros.

Abreu hit a two-run single in the Astros’ 8-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Even without a home run, Abreu has four RBI in the last three games. He’s hitting .266 with nine RBI.

Home runs will come when Abreu continues to get comfortable at the plate.

“He’s been getting his hits and it starts with one,” Baker said of Abreu. “That was huge. He got two hits tonight and he put the ball in play and he’s getting more and more accustomed to all these breaking balls they’ve been throwing him. The more you see early, the more you’re going to get your stroke and your eye back. That was big.”

Abreu slashed .304/.378/.446 with 15 home runs in 2022 and his production is sure to increase. He’s too talented of a hitter not to come through with power numbers.

“Happy today, obviously,” Abreu said. “I haven't driven in a couple of runs in a couple of days, but I’m here trying to work every single day.”

Abreu has been working with the coaches on refining his swing. Not to mention his timing.

The work is slowly paying off.

"Guys don't hit for all these years and just stop hitting," Baker said. "I talked to the people in Chicago, and usually (Abreu’s) April isn't very good anyway. Some guys are just like that. ... I told people before if you watched Ryne Sandberg and Eddie Murray in April, you would have released them."

Abreu isn’t getting released. In fact, he’s getting started. Check back in September and Abreu will almost certainly have eye-popping statistics.
