Abreu Launches First Home Run for Houston Astros, Has He Turned a Corner?

Houston Astros players had a slugfest on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, will it be the turning point for first baseman Jose Abreu?

A pair of Houston Astros players launched their first home runs of the season on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics.

Both José Altuve and José Abreu homered for the first time this year as the Astros hits seven long balls in a 10-1 rout of the Athletics for a clean sweep.

For Abreu, it’s been a long, strange trip for his first home run of 2023 — as it took the veteran first baseman 51 games to finally connect on a ball that left the ballpark.

And to say Abreu was excited to finally get his first bomb of the season is an understatement, as he circled the bases in record speed before sliding into his teammates in front of the road dugout.

Altuve was actually the first of the José's to belt a home run, as his came one inning before Abreu’s and just seven games into his return to the lineup.

Oh yeah, it also came right after a three-run blast by Chas McCormick.

Regardless of Abreu’s long drought, hopefully Sunday will be the turning point for the veteran first baseman.

With Sunday’s win over the A’s, the Astros (31-21) are now within two games of the first-place Texas Rangers (33-19) in the American League West.

Houston returns home to host Minnesota on Monday, May 29 at Minute Maid Park.

First pitch for Monday’s Memorial Day game is slated for 3:10 p.m. CT.

The Astros send J.P. France (1-1, 3.43 ERA) to the hill in the opener of the three-game series, as the Twins counter with Sonny Gray (4-0, 1.82 ERA).
