Ty Buttrey walked away from baseball in 2021 when it simply wasn’t enjoyable to go to the ballpark.

Fast forward to now and Buttrey is back with a refreshed outlook on life and baseball.

He’s hoping to become a feel-good story in spring training with the Houston Astros.

The right-hander has three seasons worth of MLB experience, all with the Los Angeles Angels. From 2018 to 2020, Buttrey pitched 115 innings in 115 appearances. He holds a career 4.30 ERA with a 1.296 WHIP.

During the ‘22 season, Buttrey spent his entire season with Triple-A Salt Lake and accumulated a 5.94 ERA over 36 1/3 innings pitched.

Buttrey was invited to spring training on a Minor League deal.

“Everyone needs to get paid, and it’s fun. I go pitch in front of 50,000 (people), and to have fans, it’s an amazing experience,” Buttrey told the Houston Chronicle. “But I didn’t really understand why I was going to the field every day, why I was doing this, why I’ve done it for so long. It got to the point where I’m like, ‘This is fun, but there has to be more than what I’m doing right now.’ I had an unhealthy relationship with the game.”

Buttrey is taking this time to recapture his form on the mound.

The Astros believed this was an easy decision to bring him to spring training.

There’s absolutely nothing to lose.

“I didn’t come here to just do my own thing. I came here because I wanted to learn and wanted to see how it’s done,” Buttrey told the Houston Chronicle. “I didn’t feel like I’d get that information from many other clubs out there. It’s the best club in baseball, the best pitching staff in baseball. It’s more difficult (to break with the club), but if I can really take the time to just enhance my game over these next couple months, what is that going to do in the long run for me?”
