If the Houston Astros truly plan to trade for a bat to boost their lineup, it may be quite costly in terms of young talent.

Astros General Manager Dana Brown recently told reporters that Houston would be interested in adding an offensive weapon to the team prior to the trade deadline.

The Astros have at least seven Minor League players who could be potential trade bait come deadline time, with many of them being up-and-coming prospects in the organization.

Those names include catcher Korey Lee, pitchers Spencer Arrighetti, Colton Gordon and Rhett Kouba, and outfielders Joey Loperfido, Quincy Hamilton and Zach Dezenzo — just to name name a handful of players other MLB teams may be interested in.

Current players on the Astros roster who could also draw trade attention include outfielders Jake Meyers, Chas McCormick and Corey Julks — although it’s more likely the club will let go of players in their farm system over guys on their 40-man roster.

But anything could happen at this point and time in the season, especially with Houston struggling at the plate and sitting in second place in the division.

Something’s got to give when it comes to the Astros lack of production at the plate, and that may come at the cost of some talented young prospects.

Houston has been prone to making last-second trades at the deadline, so don’t be surprised to see Brown and the Astros brass make a similar move in 2023.
