Cardinals Officially Making Moves; Activate Hurler, Call Up Veteran Catcher To Add To Mix

St. Louis certainly was busy Saturday afternoon

The St. Louis Cardinals are making moves.

St. Louis currently holds the worst record in the National League at 10-23 and is 10 games behind the National League Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals' biggest struggles have come from the club's starting rotation, but at this point, they are trying anything to get things back on track.

The Cardinals made a plethora of moves Friday as they called up utility man Juan Yepez and pitcher James Naile. The club placed outfielder Tyler O'Neill and pitcher Jake Woodford on the injured list and transferred pitcher Wilking Rodriguez to the 60-day injured list.

St. Louis was busy once again Saturday afternoon and officially activated right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright from the injured list and called up catcher Tres Barrera. The club also sent Guillermo Zuñiga to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and designated infielder Taylor Motter for assignment, according to the club.

Wainwright has yet to make a start this season after suffering an injury during the World Baseball Classic. The three-time All-Star is set to retire at the end of the season but still should be one of the club's best starting pitchers this season and give St. Lous a boost. In 2022, Wainwright compiled a 3.71 ERA in 32 starts in 191 2/3 innings pitched.

Barrera is a three-year MLB veteran with the Washington Nationals but joined the Cardinals organization ahead of the 2023 campaign. The catcher has appeared in 12 games so far this season with the Redbirds and has slashed .255/.314/.532 to go along with four home runs and 15 RBIs.

At this point, the Cardinals could use all of the help the club could get. St. Louis' starting pitching has been the club's biggest issue, but Wainwright hopefully should help with that. Barrera may not play a major role, but he can give the club more depth. Hopefully, these moves can help point the Cardinals in the right direction.
