Changes Reportedly Coming For Struggling Cardinals; Could Major Sell-Off Be On Way?

St. Louis could look extremely different after the trade deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball so far this season.

St. Louis entered the 2023 campaign with World Series aspirations and at this point would be lucky to finish with a winning record. The Cardinals entered the All-Star break in last place in the National League Central with a stunning 38-52 record and seem poised to be sellers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

The deadline is set to pass on August 1 and although there's no way to know for sure who will be dealt, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak insinuated changes were on the way in a recent conversation with FOX 2’s Sports Director Martin Kilcoyne.

“When you look at how things have unfolded, I don’t want to go through every little excuse we see,” Mozeliak said to Kilcoyne. “We know it hasn’t worked. We know changes have to happen. When you look at what we’ve put on paper, it should’ve worked better, but it didn’t. The front office (and) ownership knows we have to do something different. This is not the model we’re going to follow. That’s something we’ll take a hard look at (and) try to address it, but changes will happen."

Rumors have swirled around the Cardinals for months. St. Louis seemed poised to add at the deadline and specifically had an interest in top starting pitching, but now could be entering a major sell-off. The Cardinals are in such a tough spot that both 2022 National League Most Valuable Player Paul Goldschmidt and eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado even have found their names in trade rumors. Arenado even went so far as to hint that he wouldn't be too surprised if he was dealt.

While a deal for Goldschmidt or Arenado may still be unlikely, there are sure to be plenty of players on the move. Outfielders Tyler O'Neill, Dylan Carlson, and Juan Yepez have been floated as trade candidates at points this season. Utility men Tommy Edman and Brendan Donovan have been tied to other clubs and starters Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery seem to have a large market, as well.

The trade deadline will pass on August 1 and when it does, the Cardinals likely will look very different.
