Will Cardinals Sell At Trade Deadline? St. Louis Executive Gives Murky Answer About Possibility

Cardinals fans may not be happy with the club's upcoming deadline decisions

At one point it seemed like the St. Louis Cardinals would be buyers ahead of the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline but that may no longer be the case.

St. Louis certainly has been disappointing so far this season. The Cardinals entered the 2023 campaign with extremely high expectations after winning 93 games in 2022 and many expected them to compete for a World Series title this season. Things haven't gone as planned so far this season and the Cardinals currently have the worst record in the National League at 25-37.

There's still plenty of time left in the season for the Cardinals to get back on track, but if they don't do so in the very near future, they very well may end up being sellers ahead of the trade deadline, according to a conversation between The Athletic's Katie Woo and Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak.

"So that's the question that is coming up a lot, are we buying or selling, Mozeliak said. "Right now, we're staying. We're holding. Ultimately, as we see the next four to six weeks develop, that might decide what we really do in the end. I hope we're actively trying to get better come July than looking to move talent."

If the Cardinals are unable to get back in the postseason race, one player who reportedly could be on the move is first baseman and 2022 National League Most Valuable Player Paul Goldschmidt. Although a move may be unlikely, the Cardinals are at a point where nothing can be ruled out. The Cardinals were rumored to be buyers at one point, but St. Louis has struggled lately so now it isn't as certain what the club will do.

While there's still certainly a chance the Cardinals turn things around and make an addition or two ahead of the deadline, if things continue to spiral out of control, St. Louis fans may be unhappy with upcoming moves.
