Cardinals Trade Gold Glove Winner To Red Sox In Effort To Bolster Pitching Depth

St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has not been shy about his desire to trade from his logjam of outfielders this winter.

After mentioning one specific player by name, he has finally found a suitable trade.

The Cardinals reportedly have traded outfielder Tyler O'Neill to the Boston Red Sox for right-handed pitchers Nick Robertson and Victor Santos according to The Boston Globe's Alex Speier.

O'Neill hit .231 with 23 extra-base hits including nine home runs, 21 RBIs, and a .715 OPS in 72 games played for the Cardinals last season.

The 28-year-old was as good as gone when Mozeliak mentioned him by name as a player they are listening to offers on while speaking to MLB Network Radio at the Winter Meetings.

The longtime Cardinals slugger is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner but has largely struggled to stay healthy since his breakout 2021 season.

While the return is not of note, the biggest reason for the Cardinals moving on from O'Neill is the lack of at-bats to go around. Mozeliak stated earlier in the week that he plans on having Tommy Edman, Lars Nootbar and Jordan Walker as the starting trio with Dylan Carlson as the fourth outfielder.
