Chicago Cubs Drop Series to Marlins Despite Strong Offensive Showing
The Chicago Cubs fell to the Miami Marlins on Saturday night 7-6 on LoanDepot Park despite a fantastic offensive showing.
However, everything that could go wrong for the Cubs (14-12) did go wrong in the first inning.
Pitching prospect Caleb Kilian was called up to make a spot start in Jameson Taillon's place after the former was placed on the 15-day injured list. Kilian allowed seven earned runs in 3.1 innings of work, five of which came in the first inning.
Offensively, Chicago was able to put up six runs, two of which came in a two-run rally in the eighth inning that fell just short.
Patrick Wisdom hit his 10th home run of the season in the second inning, a two-run shot. Cody Bellinger also stayed hot as he added his own home run of the solo variety in the sixth inning.
Nico Hoerner also looked good as he posted two more RBI on the evening.
With the loss, the Cubs lost the series and are now on a bit of a skid. The Marlins also improved to 9-0 in one-run games this season.
The Cubs will try and salvage something of this series on Sunday when they take on Miami at 11:05 a.m. CT. Justin Steel (4-0, 1.19) will take the mound and face Bryan Hoeing (0-1, 9.82) of Miami.
