You would never know how much Dansby Swanson has on his mind.

Until he let the Chicago Cubs know in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s 14-9 win over the Seattle Mariners at Wrigley Field.

Swanson had four hits but opted to be lifted from the game because he had been up most of the night with his wife, Mallory. Swanson also had some tightness and cramps in his left side.

Mallory underwent surgery on Tuesday morning to repair a torn patella tendon in her left knee. She’s a standout player for the United States Women’s National Team and the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL.

Mallory Swanson will almost certainly be sidelined when the USWNT bids for a World Cup title later this summer.

"She's all right," Dansby Swanson said. "I think everybody knows it's a pretty tough and heartbreaking situation just for her. I'm heartbroken for her. Just a lot of tears and sadness. You know, two things can be true at the same time. It can stink, and we can be sad and upset. We can also understand God's bigger picture and plans and everything. Both things can be true. It's just a sad time. We'll get through it together."

Dansby signed a seven-year, $177 million deal in the offseason and struggled a bit offensively in spring training.

When the games started for real, Swanson has proven to be one of the top hitters in Major League Baseball.

Swanson has reached safely in seven of 10 games with the Cubs, slashing .400/.467/.450.

Despite the hot streak, he listened to his body. Smart move.

It’s a marathon 162-game regular season.

"Anything more probably would have put me in harm's way," Swanson said. "I've played a lot in my career. And the last thing I want to do is ever come out of games. I have a little bit of like an ego, pride thing with that. But, it just didn't feel smart in the moment, and I just kind of trusted my gut."
