The top three teams didn’t come as a surprise in Sportico’s latest valuations of Major League Baseball franchises.

The franchise ranked fourth was a mild surprise, however.

The Chicago Cubs came in fourth at $4.69 billion, ranking behind the New York Yankees ($7.13 billion), Los Angeles Dodgers ($5.24 billion) and Boston Red Sox ($5.21 billion).

Sportico reported that the Cubs “revenue was up some $60 million from 2021 to 2022, which my eyeballing indicates is tracking with most large-market MLB teams (remember, 2021 attendance was still impacted by the pandemic). And that $500 million figure, if accurate, is upwards of $100 million more than – for one relevant example – the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs *should* still have a tremendous spending advantage in the NL Central, if and when they want to use it …”

Chairman Tom Ricketts and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer had quite an active offseason, highlighted by the addition of Dansby Swanson to a seven-year, $177 million deal.

The Cubs also signed a number of other key players such as Jameson Taillon, Brad Boxberger, Cody Bellinger, Trey Mancini, Drew Smyly and Tucker Barnhart, among others.

The Cubs, who won the World Series in 2016, have missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons with disappointing losing records.

But the franchise appears to be trending up on the field.

According to Sportico, they’re clearly trending up off the field in terms of valuation.
