Chicago Cubs Make Massive Roster Changes, Hosmer Released Ahead of Phillies Matchup

The Chicago Cubs have released Eric Hosmer amid a massive roster shakeup ahead of their weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Eric Hosmer era in Chicago is over as the Chicago Cubs have DFA'd Hosmer ahead of their weekend series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

With Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel performing well, there was no place for the struggling Hosmer who was having trouble in the field and plate.

We wrote about the possibility of letting Hosmer go in favor of letting the prospects play just a few days ago.

Luckily that experiment lasted just 31 games.

Good news is that second baseman Nico Hoerner has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list after suffering a hamstring strain. He will be re-inserted into the lineup.

Left handers Edwin Rios was recalled in a corresponding move and Mike Tauchman was selected.

Additionally, Cody Bellinger was placed on the injured list retroactive to May 16 and Keegan Thompson was optioned after a blowup against the Houston Astros on Wednesday.

Lots of moves ahead of Friday's matchup with the Phillies, but overall this should be a good sign that Chicago is not happy with the state of affairs and is willing to try something new to help pull them out of their downward spiral.
