Chicago Cubs Make More Roster Cuts as Opening Day Looms
The Chicago Cubs are trimming down their roster as MLB Opening Day is quickly approaching. With just under two weeks to go to the beginning of the regular season, the Cubs made five roster cuts on Saturday.
None of them are particularly surprising, but there are a few players who could resurface at the MLB level later this season.
Right-handers Jeremiah Estrada and Caleb Kilian were optioned to Triple-A, while left-handers Bailey Horn, Nick Neidert, and Eric Stout were sent to the minor league camp.
That brings the roster to 51.
Estrada and Kilian could both see some time at the Major League level this season. Kilian came up for a cup of coffee last season but struggled with his command, an issue that will have to be resolved before given another chance.
Estrada is a casualty for the sole fact he has minor league options available. We discussed yesterday how there were going to be players caught in the crossfire as the front office decides how to approach pitchers that didn't have any options left Julian Merryweather and Adbert Alzolay.
Expect more cuts in the coming days as Chicago trims their roster down to size.
