Former Chicago Cub Hosmer Already Linked to National League Contender

Former Chicago Cubs first baseman has already been linked to a National League contender following his release from the club.

The Chicago Cubs officially released first baseman Eric Hosmer after designating him for assignment last week. He is now free to sign with any team in MLB.

Plenty of teams could pursue his help, a four-time Gold Glover and a an All-Star in 2016, the 33-year-old could be a decent bench piece for a contender looking for Major League depth.

One team that has already been linked to him is the National League champions Philadelphia Phillies. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Hosmer would be a good fit for the squad.

That fit was already mentioned by our network's Inside the Phillies upon the Cubs DFA of Hosmer.

In Chicago's case, Hosmer was not producing enough to justify his place on the roster over youngsters like Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel.

As for Philadelphia, Alec Bohm, their everyday third baseman, has been manning first base following injuries to Rhys Hoskins and Darick Hall.

Bryce Harper has been taking reps at first base, but as Heyman points out, the Phillies may not want to risk their superstar in the field just seven months removed from Tommy John surgery.

It'll be interesting to see where Hosmer ultimately lands as it could be his last shot in the league.
