The Chicago Cubs officially lost another member of their coaching staff on Saturday as bench coach Andy Green was hired by the New York Mets

Green served as David Ross' bench coach from 2020-2023. However, with Ross getting fired and replaced by former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell, keeping his current role was no longer a viable option for Green.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Cubs tried to keep Green and offered him another role in the organization. He turned it down for an opening in the Mets' front office, where he will have a senior role in player development, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Moving from a field-level role in the dugout to a front-office job is a clear promotion for Green, so it's hard to blame him for taking it. If his goal is to be in a front office long-term or potentially become a GM someday, it's definitely a better career move.

Green also played the final season of his MLB career for New York in 2009, so he already has a connection there. He will work under the Mets' new president of baseball operations David Stearns.

With Green officially gone, Chicago must continue its search for a new bench coach to pair with Counsell. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported earlier on Saturday that the Cubs do not intend to hire Miami Marlins first base coach Jon Jay after interviewing him for the position, so there do not appear to be any obvious frontrunners at this time.
