When the offseason began, it was thought that the Chicago Cubs would be looking for additional slugging and everyday players at first and third base.

If they are unable to re-sign Cody Bellinger, that would put more pressure on them to add these players to their roster. Bellinger was their best hitter last season and played first base at times in addition to his normal outfield role.

Losing him would be a significant loss on all fronts.

The Cubs would need to replace the production of his bat first and foremost, before turning their attention to a full-time first baseman.

Former MLB executive Jim Bowden thinks that Chicago should go after available slugger Rhys Hoskins in free agency.

"I like Hoskins’ fit with the Cubs if they don’t re-sign Bellinger," he writes in a straightforward fashion for The Athletic.

Projecting forward, they could even still target the slugging first baseman if they happen to re-sign Bellinger.

Hoskins should not be an expensive addition after missing all of 2023 with a torn ACL suffered in spring training. He likely can be added on a short-term contract similar to what they did with Bellinger last offseason.

He would provide a boost for the Cubs at first base after they rotated multiple players at that role. While the slugging first baseman has had some defensive struggles in the past, he would be a stabilizing force for Chicago and add value in their lineup.

During his six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, he recorded a slash line of .242/.353/.492. He has hit 148 homers and driven in 405 runs during his career. He's hit 25 or more home runs in four out of his six years.

It seems like the Cubs will focus their attention on the high-profile names on the market, but could eventually pivot to Hoskins to fill some of the needs on their roster.
