Update On Potential Happ Extension With Chicago Cubs

In this story:
The Chicago Cubs are doing a great job of locking in some of their best talent. The club was able to get a deal done with second baseman Nico Hoerner before Opening Day to the tune of three-year, $35 million contract.
One player we pegged during Spring Training as a candidate for an extension was left fielder Ian Happ.
Reports suggested that there was communication between the team and player to get a deal done, but Happ wanted an extension to be completed by Opening Day. For many players, contract negotiations in season can be distracting. Something Happ likely wanted to avoid heading into his contract year.
A new report from The Athletic suggests that the team and Happ are still in communication. . . sort of.
According to the report, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said that the sides had “really productive and really cordial” conversations. Whether or not those are continuing remain to be seen.
Regardless, it appears that Chicago wants Happ back, he has proven to be the heart and soul of this young club. He is also producing on the field to start the season slashing .333/.529/.667 with a home run in 12 at-bats.
