Chicago Cubs Linked to Exciting All-Star Third Baseman in Free Agency

The Chicago Cubs have plenty of needs to fill this offseason in MLB free agency.

From first base to third base to the outfield and even the the bullpen, the Cubs front office will have to determine how to best utilize their budget while considering the luxury tax.

It appears the rotation is mostly set with Marcus Stroman and Kyle Hendricks both expected to return.

Cody Bellinger has a high chance of not being re-signed. And the hold at first base is still glaring.

But third base is where Chicago could really set themselves apart.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Toronto Blue Jays free agent third baseman Matt Chapman could be a target.

Chapman is known for his elite defending at the hot corner and he has the capability of putting up some power. He would be a solid addition to what is already one of the better defensive infield units in baseball.

However, his bat would slot in well with the current crop of hitters.

At 31 years old, Chapman's long-term viability is in question, but his addition to the roster and making Chicago's defense the best in the game is not.

It only depends on how far the Cubs want to go in pursuing a player exiting his prime.

Considering Chicago will be pushing $200 million in payroll by bringing back Hendricks and Stroman, not much will be left on the table if they hope to avoid the luxury tax.

If the front office does decide to bring back Cody Bellinger, Chapman would be one luxury too far.

If not, the Cubs may just have the best defensive unit in all of baseball next season.
