Chicago Cubs Might Hold Onto Young Star Instead of Trading Him

In this story:
Earlier when the offseason got underway, there was some thought that the Chicago Cubs could be looking to trade their young star Christopher Morel to bring in a position of need.
Morel didn't develop at third base like they hoped and was largely used as their primary designated hitter.
He is viewed as their best trade chip, of the players who would be available, because he is under team control until 2028 and proved to be a good hitter last year.
An interesting development in the entire Morel discussion is that it seems like his best defensive position is second base.
Across 33 games and 242 innings there last season, he only recorded one error and had a fielding percentage of .990. His defense was substantially worse at third base, shortstop and the outfield where he recorded multiple errors.
Second base was the only position where he didn't provide negative value defensively.
That presents an issue for the Cubs and Morel, as Nico Hoerner is coming off winning a Gold Glove for the 2023 season and is under club control through 2026.
So, this should definitely make Chicago want to trade him, right?
Don't be so sure.
While there's speculation that the trade market will be hot this offseason and Morel could generate interest, knowing that he can provide solid defense at second makes him valuable to the Cubs.
What happens if Hoerner gets injured? Who replaces the power bat if they can't re-sign Cody Bellinger?
Morel would be the answer to these questions if he plays at the same level as he did last season.
Chicago should still explore trade options for the young star as the infield market isn't as deep as past years.
But, don't be surprised if the Cubs' asking price for Morel ultimately keeps others from making a trade and the slugger returns for the 2024 season.
