In this story:

The Chicago Cubs plan on contending during the 2023 MLB season. They have the roster to not just be competitive in the division, but in the National League as a whole.

However, there has been plenty of talk about extending two of their biggest names in Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ. The media has been all over it.

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer addressed the issue on Wednesday while on the Bernstein & Holmes Show. Hoyer shed light on where they see talks going and his hope that they can get something done.

"That is absolutely our goal," Hoyer said. "We’d love to reach a deal with those guys. I hope it happens. Obviously, we have to have things line up correctly for that to happen, but certainly that is the desire. I think they’re both really good players, I think they’re both really good players, they’re both really good leaders, they both represent the organization exceptionally well. That’s the hope.”

It would be good news for the Cubs and their fans to keep these two bright players in the organization. They embodied what the franchise stands for and helps sure up unknowns on the roster.

Now the question remains: when?
