Diamondbacks Spending Pool for 2023 Draft Revealed

In this story:
With the 2023 MLB Draft just three months away, MLB Pipeline published an article last night detailing each team's total bonus pools and the value for each pick in the first 10 rounds. The Diamondbacks will have the 11th largest signing bonus pool in the 2023 MLB Draft, with just over $11 million to spend. Here's how the D-backs total bonus pool breaks down, pick-by-pick:
| Round (Pick) | Slot Value |
|---|---|
1st (12) | $5,043,800 |
2nd (48) | $1,783,000 |
Comp. B (64) | $1,213,200 |
3rd (80) | $887,000 |
4th (112) | $597,500 |
5th (148) | $421,100 |
6th (175) | $328,300 |
7th (205) | $256,700 |
8th (235) | $204,900 |
9th (265) | $180,000 |
10th (295) | $168,800 |
The first night of the draft accounts for $8 million, or 73%, of the team's total pool value. That starts with the No. 12 overall selection, which is worth just over $5 million.
Even though each pick carries a recommended slot value, teams are free to spend from their pools in the way they see fit. Teams may strategize how they spend the money, depending on how much players are willing to sign for. Typically Arizona employs a "Best Player Available" approach, with three of their six first round picks signing at full slot (Pavin Smith, Corbin Carroll, Druw Jones), one under (Bryce Jarvis), and one over (Jordan Lawlar).
For players selected in the first 10 rounds, every dollar spent towards signing them counts towards the pool. Players taken after the 10th round can be signed up to $125,000 without counting towards the pool but if their bonus exceeds that value, the overage total will count towards the pool. Players who participate in the 3rd annual draft combine, which will be held at Chase Field this year, are entitled to no less than 75% of their pick's recommended slot value.
