Before today's game Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo gave an update on Drey Jameson, who has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. The typical recovery and return to action from the surgery is 12-15 months, which not only ends his 2023 season but also puts his availability for the 2024 season in doubt.

"Not great news, but it is what it is" said Lovullo. "Drey is resilient and we're going to see him again. He's going to get healthy and he's going to help this team win a lot of baseball games for a long time."

Jameson suffered the injury against the Mets on July 6th and is currently on the 60-day injured list. The 26-year-old right-hander initially attempted the rehab route, but experienced discomfort after his second bullpen session and was pulled from his throwing program

"He was really encouraged early on by the throwing program and his ability to let the ball go and be pain-free. I think when he stepped on to a mound, that he just felt like he had nothing behind the ball. There was not a lot of power and the discomfort began at that point. That was the trigger for all of us, that he should get re-examined and certainly Tommy John was the best option for him."

The decision for Jameson to attempt to rehab, instead of getting surgery rightaway, came down to the minute chance he could return by the end of the season while not much risk of losing many games in 2024.

"If he was going to have Tommy John in July or August, he's going to miss the majority of the 2024 season anyway. This is a championship mentality, he's going to full throttle it to try to get back to help us win baseball games this year knowing that if it didn't work he would still have the procedure and come back in next August or September. I think the timeline in his head made a lot of sense, and I appreciate the effort he made to make it back here for us."

With Jameson unlikely to have a huge impact on the 2024 season, the timeline for his recovery should come down to being fully healthy when he reports to camp for the 2025 season.
