Zac Gallen was given a 3-0 lead and had two outs on two pitches in the bottom of sixth, with new closer in Paul Sewald waiting down in the bullpen if they could get the game to the 9th. But Gallen blew the lead, giving up a single, an RBI double, and then a two-run homer by Brandon Crawford that tied the game at 3-3.

Miguel Castro came in to relieve in the 7th and allowed a solo homer to Lamont Wade Jr. and the Giants had a lead they would never relinquish. Adding insult to injury, Geraldo Perdomo had singled to lead off the 9th and with two outs and Christian Walker at the plate against lefty Sean Manaea. But Perdomo got picked off on a throw down to first by catcher Partrick Bailey, ending the game.

After the game and obviously annoyed Torey Lovullo said "That can't happen, times infinity"

Solo homers by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the 5th, and then Alek Thomas and Ketel Marte in the 6th had spotted Gallen his lead.  Marte's homer was the 100th of his career. Prior to that Giants starter Alex Cobb had pitched to the minimum number of batters through the first four innings.  Walker singled in the 2nd inning but  was eliminated by a Gurriel double play, his MLB leading 15th of the year.  Perdomo walked to lead off the 4th but got caught stealing for the first of his two outs on base. So with the futile offense in attendance again it was a pleasant surprise when the D-backs onslaught of homers seemingly turned the tide.

It was not to be however. Outside of the three homers, the D-backs had just three singles. Newly traded for Jace Peterson also had a single in the 8th, but he too was caught stealing, as the D-backs managed three outs on base in total.

The long ball has been a serious issue for Zac Gallen for some time now. His manager talked about this not being the norm for him, but he has just one homer less start in his last 11 games.

Miguel Castro has had a similar rough time of it the last two months. He began the season as a pitcher that looked like he had found himself in a new home and with a new pitching coach in Brent Strom. But ever since giving up a ninth inning grand slam to Eddie Rosario to blow a game against the Braves his season has spiraled.

Another down note was a potential serious injury to Austin Adams. Joc Pederson hit a sharp ground ball up the box that hit off Adams ankle. He was barely able to put weight on it as he had to be helped off the field. He is being evaluated.

Game three of the four game series is tomorrow night at 6:45 . Slade Cecconi will be making his major league debut for the Diamondbacks. He be opposed by Logan Webb.
