Former Padres Slugger Opts Out Of Minor League Deal With NL Contender, Heads Back to Free Agency
A familiar face will be hitting the open market soon. Luke Voit, who suited up in 82 games for your San Diego Padres in 2022, has opted out of his minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is in search of a bigger role than what the NL Central contender had him signed to.
Injuries have given Voit the opportunity to possibly negotiate for a big league roster spot with Milwaukee but he also now has the freedom to see what other franchises would take him. This news was first reported by the MLB's Adam McCalvy.
"Luke Voit has opted out of his minor league deal with the Brewers. Voit can still make the Brewers’ Opening Day roster, but he is now free to explore options with other teams, per @AdamMcCalvy."
Despite Voit showing promise and production during his stint in San Diego, the front office had a bigger picture in mind and sent him to the Washington Nationals before the season concluded. They were able to land Juan Soto in return and when someone like him is available, you have to take that chance.
But the 32-year-old definitely still deserves a role on a major league team. In his final three Spring Training games with the Brewers, he showcased to the entire league that he still has a ton slugging power with his multiple home runs and RBI's.
In 2022, Voit posted a slash line of .226/.308/.402. He may not be as elite as he was during his prime years with the Yankees but he proved to be a reliable option in his Friars days and would improve whoever gives him the opportunity.
The Padres on the other hand pretty much have their final roster set and look forward to opening day this week !
