One of the more strange endings to a game this season took place on Sunday as the San Diego Padres were unable to complete a sweep against the Colorado Rockies. At 3:47 pm PT, the game was tied 4-4 at the bottom of ninth when rain and lightning surrounded Coors Field and it resulted in a delay that lasted about 85 minutes. Gameplay did not resume until 5:10 pm PT and the Friars allowed two homers in that same inning en rout to a 5-4 loss.

But that is far from the full story as Blake Snell was putting together one of his best and most productive performances of the season in his first seven innings. 12 batters had been struck out at his hand and he had only allowed one run on three hits. This was a nice continuation of some recent solid outings.

Unfortunately, Snell took a 108 MPH ball right to his ankle that immediately ballooned up and San Diego had to look to their bullpen much earlier than anybody would've liked.

Nonetheless, fans should be very hyped to see how Snell builds off of this because he wanted to stay in the game despite taking that big hit. This is someone who has been ridiculed in the past for his lack of ability to be able to make it to even five innings.

However, he did what needed to be done, kept his pitch count low, and put his squad in position to win. Snell also provided an update on his ankle and shared good news that X-rays did not show any serious damage.

“I’d like to finish the game,” said Snell. “That’d be the goal, right? Who knows? But I got hit and I only went seven. It was pretty swollen. I didn’t know until I got in there, but it’s getting better and I’ll be good by my next start. I can’t wait for that.”

We cannot wait either!
