Things for the Padres just continue to not go well. After an 8-4 loss to the last place Pirates -- a team with the third-worst record in the National League -- the San Diego ballclub remained 6 games behind in the Wild Card race while letting another crucial day tick off the calendar.

With the trade deadline now one week away, that loss of one day on the calendar is even more glaring. And Manny Machado doesn't seem to understand the gravity of that.

After the loss, Machado gave another passive interview to reporters at Petco Park. Along with several of his now tired "it's just baseball" statements, he seemingly went on the defensive about the club's status heading toward the trade deadline.

Will they add players or will they trade talent and rebuild for another big push in the offseason? That's what the front office has fewer than 168 hours to decide. Wins would understandably help AJ Preller and Peter Seidler's decision making.

The veteran seems to not get that.

"We believe in the guys that are in here, we believe that we got to go out there and win tonight's game, we can't control who gets traded and who doesn't..."

But... wins would help the Padres NOT trade players, Manny. And wins are the thing the team can control.

It's a frustrated clubhouse, people understand that. But as the spiral continues for the club, the accountability from stars like Manny and Fernando Tatis Jr. seems to be missing more and more.

For the better part of three months now, the Padres have played mostly under .500 ball, and with each loss and each embarrassment, it keeps coming back to, "we just need to go out there and play baseball."

The club is 33-38 since the start of May and is at risk of possibly losing Blake Snell, Josh Hader, or even Juan Soto if the next seven games don't turn out a whole heck of a lot better.
