In this story:

It would be super ideal to be up 2-0 on the Atlanta Braves right now but 1-1 is certainly the next best thing. It was another slow start for the San Diego Padres but the bullpen performed much better on Friday night and were able to prevail against the Braves 5-4.

The victory was a scrappy one and Josh Hader came in clutch to close out the ballgame at the pitching mound. Brent Honeywell and Luis Garcia also did an excellent job of only allowing one run total after taking over for Nick Martinez in the fifth inning.

Nelson Cruz was the man who got it all started for the Friars with a big double in the first inning that got Juan Soto to home plate.

Their next run came soon after thanks to an Austin Nola walk that allowed Manny Machado to score.

Their lead was then extended to 3-0 in the same inning as Cruz got a single this time that allowed Jose Azocar to get a quick one. Quick reminder that he is doing this at the age of 42!

But then it felt like in the blink of an eye, the Braves came storming back. They got hot in the third inning and matched every single one of the Padres' ones.

A home run, single, and wild pitch allowed the likes of Marcell Ozuna, Ronald Acuna Jr, and Matt Olson to find their way around the bases.

Manny Machado was brought home once again in the fifth inning and this time was at the hands of a sacrifice flyball from Jake Cronenworth.

However, the Braves tied it up once again when they stepped up to bat off of a walk from Sean Murphy that pushed Acuna Jr. to come home once again.

But who better than Xander Bogaerts to get the biggest hit of the night and bring in Trent Grisham for the Padres' final run that put them up 5-4 and would be the ultimate deciding factor in the game.

And of course, shoutout to Josh Hader for taking care of business in the closing plays.
