Padres and Manny Machado Rumored to Be Way Apart in Contract Numbers

In this story:
Since arriving to this year's Spring Training, All-Star Manny Machado has done nothing but speak highly of the Padres franchise, express his excitement to play with new teammates, and promise fans that this year will be a special one. He appears ready to continue the momentum that his squad was playing with last season.
However, he also made it very clear that if San Diego's front office didn't offer him a contract extension he liked before Spring Training got going, he would pause conversations until the offseason. The main reason for this is that the third baseman doesn't want his own personal business distracting the team's goals.
It seems as though the Padres and Machado are having even bigger problems seeing eye to eye on money than we previously thought. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that there is currently a $145 million difference in contract preferences between both parties.

"The Padres offered Machado a five-year, $105 million extension this week. The contract would begin in 2029, keeping his original 10-year, $300 million deal intact," said Nightengale. "Machado has five years and $150 million remaining after this season."
Machado would then reveal his own preference of 10 years, $400 million. That is currently a huge difference between what he wants and what the club believes he is worth. The 2022 NL MVP finalist wants to get paid into his early 40's and be a part of a contending team.
Change of scenery is nothing new recently for Machado as he only played with the Dodgers for half the season in 2018 before joining the Friars. However, previous to that, he spent about six seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and became a household name. The 30-year-old is looking for respect from the franchise he's led to many wins and wants to find another long-term home.
Machado has already been spotted at Spring Training getting familiar with a roster that has high hopes this year.
