Fans of the San Diego Padres could not wait to welcome back their guys after a grueling road trip to Atlanta and New York. Unfortunately, their energy was not matched as they fell to the Milwaukee Brewers in front of a sold-out Petco Park crowd 4-3. This loss was capitalized by a bad pitcher-catcher pairing and a very dry offense.

San Diego did not start off the game very strong but had numerous opportunities to bounce back throughout the match.

The Brewers got going immediately off of a home run from Rowdy Tellez that also allowed Christian Yelich to score in the first inning.

It was a pretty bad sign for Nick Martinez who stayed on the mound for six innings and allowed three runs, five hits, and posted a 5.60 ERA with only two strikeouts. 

However, Manny Machado then decided very soon after that it was finally time to go deep this season. He bombed a fastball from Colin Rea 380 feet to give him his first home run of the 2023 season.

But after this it was a complete snooze-fest on offense for some time. Their plate appearances were not productive at all and they were struggling to garner anything from anybody.

We did not see another run scored until the fifth and you guessed it, it came from Milwaukee's end.

Just before Martinez's night ended, he gave up another homer at the hands of Mike Brosseau. It just wasn't the night for him.

And when all hope seemed to be lost and every angry Padres fan had their Twitter fingers sore from roasting the Padres offense, Trent Grisham put on the cape and bombed a two-run home run in the eighth inning to tie the game 3-3.

Matt Carpenter was brought home with him in the process. It was just his fourth homer of the year.

The ninth inning then rolled around and it was time for Josh Hader to take on his old team for the first time since being traded away last season. He checked in as the closing pitcher and got to work.

He got Owen Miller to bite on a pop-up that was caught by Grisham, struck out Joey Wiemer, and got Christian Yelich to bite as well.

However, it did go to the tenth inning and the Brewers were able able to extend their lead to 4-3 thanks to a sacrifice hit from Rowdy Tellez.

The Friars got some runners on base as well but Luis Campusano was unable to capitalize and they came up at short at the end.

They now fall to 7-7 on the year and started their series against the Milwaukee Brewers 0-1. Another chance at redemption will come Friday at 6:40 pm PT.
