Padres Sign San Diego Native Outfielder to MiLB Deal

The San Diego Padres made a minor move to their overall depth, signing outfielder Cal Mitchell to a minor league contract. The deal, however, does have an invite to spring training in it, as well.

Mitchell should be given the chance to make the roster for next season with a strong spring outing, and the team is excited to see what he can do.

He is originally from the San Diego area, so he may get to play for his hometown team. This is a great story and the Padres could use his left-handed bat on their roster.

Mitchell is a former second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 2017 MLB Draft, and he does have limited experience playing in the big leagues. In 216 at-bats for the Pirates, Mitchell has hit .222 with five home runs and 17 runs batted in. He also added in three stolen bases.

He appeared in just two games for Pittsburgh last season and spent most of the season in Triple-A. He hit .261 with nine home runs and 55 runs batted in over 78 games with the Pirates Triple-A squad.

The Padres have been looking for cheap options to take over the roster, and this could be one way for them to get an outfielder. They have their core in place, but the team also wants to build a more well-balanced squad heading into next season.
