Could Former Marlins Slugger Be a Solid Fit for Philadelphia Phillies?

The Philadelphia Phillies may look to add a bat this winter, could a former Miami Marlins slugger be the answer?

The Philadelphia Phillies will almost assuredly pursue an extra power bat this winter. The loss of Rhys Hoskins has left a power hole in the lineup, something the Phillies had to deal with in 2023, but will likely want to address ahead of the 2024 MLB season.

One name who has been thrown out there as a possibility by Philly Sports Network is that of Jorge Soler, the former Miami Marlins slugger.

A couple of quick basics.

Soler is entering his age-32 season, can play outfield, but has been used more as a designated hitter. The righty hit 36 home runs for Miami last season and in 2019 put up 48 home runs for the Kansas City Royals.

There is no doubt the guy has power.

However, he fits the profile of a lot of the same type of players the Phillies already have rostered. High-powered outfielders without a ton of defensive competency.

Adding Soler to the roster likely creates a type of platoon in the corner outfields with Soler, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos.

According to Spotrac, Soler could be in line for a payday north of four years and $55 million. It's a relatively digestible price when you consider the home run potential and what other outfielders in this thin class will likely garner.

Unless Philadelphia wishes to pursue a top-tier name like Cody Bellinger, then adding Soler, who has been an absolute menace to the Phillies, may be the best option.

When something works for you, like a power-heavy roster, sometimes you just have to lean into it.
