This Day in Phillies History: September 26

Today in Philadelphia Phillies history, Curt Schilling reached 300 strikeouts for the second season in a row in 1998.

It is getting to the point in the season where some big time events in Philadelphia Phillies history are going to pop up. Until then, it is mostly just personal accolades that dominate these days in history.

That is the case for today, Sept. 26, when starting pitcher Curt Schilling reached 300 strikeouts for the second season in a row in 1998. Schilling is one of only five players in major league history with back-to-back seasons of 300 strikeouts.

For comparison, with seven games left in the 2021 MLB season, the leader in strikeouts, Robbie Ray, only has 244. Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler is second in the majors in strikeouts with 240.

Schilling was a different breed than pitchers are nowadays, as they are handled differently in 2021 than they were in the 1990s. However, the feat Schilling was able to pull off was nothing short of masterful.

He also did it against the Marlins, so here is to hoping that the Phillies finally figure out how to beat Miami next week in the final series of the season.

Additionally, shortstop Jimmy Rollins appeared on the cover of a little publication known as Sports Illustrated (anyone heard of it?) on this day in 2005. Rollins was in the middle of a season in which he slashed .290/.338/.431 and hit 12 homeruns.

Who knows, maybe Phillies history will be made today when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hans Crouse is making his major league debut, which is an event that is always ripe for the record books.

Crouse joins infielder Ron Clark as a Phillie making their major league debut on Sept. 26. Clark debuted in 1975 in a game they lost 3-2. Let's hope Crouse has better luck.
