On this day in 1950, Philadelphia Phillies right-hander and Hall-of-Famer Robin Roberts, in the first of his six consecutive 20-win seasons, becomes the first Phillie to win 20 games for the team since Grover Cleveland Alexander.

Alexander accomplished the feat with a total of 30 victories in 1917. Roberts' complete-game, 10-inning victory over the Dodgers clinched Philadelphia's first NL pennant since 1915.

Roberts finished his career 286-245 in 609 starts, with a 3.41 ERA and 2,357 strikeouts in 4688.2 IP.

20 years later, in 1970, Philadelphia played their final game at Connie Mack Stadium, in which they beat the Expos 2-1 in 10 innings.

A post-game ceremony, which included the removal of home plate to be delivered to Veterans Stadium by helicopter, was cancelled due to fans swarming onto the field and damaging the ballpark. More details on this incident can be found here.

Connie Mack Stadium, originally known as Shibe Park, stood in Philadelphia for 61 years. It opened on April 12, 1909 and was located on N. 21st St. and W. Lehigh Ave.

The stadium was home to three different franchises over the course of its history. They included the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League from 1909 to 1954,  the Philadelphia Phillies (Blue Jays from 1944 to 1949) of the National League from 1938 to 1970, and the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League from 1940, 1942 to 1957.

Therefore, the 1950 Phillies, famously known as "the Whiz Kids," were the lone Phillies team to host a World Series at the park.
