Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Jean Segura deserves more credit for what he has accomplished in 2021, from both an offensive and defensive standpoint.

His 2021 offensive numbers reflect just how good he has been at the plate.

Through 123 games, he's slashed .295/.355/.448 with a team-leading 147 hits, 26 doubles, 14 homers, 56 RBI, scored 74 runs, and posted an OPS of .804.

Segura particularly shined in the first-half, in which he bat .322/.371/.456 and put up an OPS of .827. He collected 77 hits, 14 doubles, three triples, and 16 walks in 61 games.

That's why it came as a shock to many Phillies fans when he was not voted an MLB All-Star. Quite frankly, he was more than deserving of the honor of being named to his third Midsummer Classic.

Segura stepping it up offensively has been key for a Phillies team that has dealt with a multitude of injuries this season, including but not limited to Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins, and J.T. Realmuto.

Although Segura dealt with an injury of his own this season when he strained his left groin in June, that hasn't hindered him in making spectacular defensive plays at second base.

In 120 games at second base this season, he has 212 putouts, 316 assists, turned 82 double-plays, and committed 10 errors. Baseball Savant also places him in the 95th percentile in Outs Above Average (OAA).

Jean, or as Phillies Twitter has nicknamed him, "Jeanie Bo Beanie," has displayed time and time again that he has an absolute missile of an arm, powering the ball over to first in a way many cannot replicate.

And Segura's defensive capabilities are more than welcome on a team where multiple position players struggle with that facet of the game.

It's fair to say that behind the likes of Harper, Segura has easily been the team's MVP in 2021, and his accomplishments should not go unappreciated by the fanbase. Let's hope Segura's success carries into 2022.
