Jordan Montgomery, Other Boras Free Agent Clients Still Waiting For Deals

Former Texas Rangers pitcher Jordan Montgomery is part of a set of free agents all represented by agent Scott Boras.

The Texas Rangers could still use Jordan Montgomery. He’s still available as a free agent, and multiple reports say the left-hander wants to return to the Rangers.

Montgomery is not the only one waiting to get a deal. In fact, he's not the only Scott Boras client waiting for a deal.

Three other significant free agents — and Boras clients — are still available, including pitcher Blake Snell, outfielder Cody Bellinger and third baseman Matt Chapman.

The good news for those hoping that Montgomery returns to Arlington is that the Rangers remain his logical destination, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. He wrote that both the Rangers and the Boston Red Sox “make sense” for Montgomery.

This year’s free-agent market has been slow. Even with more than $1 billion spent, most of that has been spent by the Los Angeles Dodgers, including $700 million for Shohei Ohtani and more than $300 million for pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

The pair sucked the oxygen out of most of the market for December and early January and has put Boras’ top clients on the sidelines.

Passan wrote this isn’t the first time it’s happened — to the market or to Boras. Back in the 2017-18 offseason, when Ohtani came to the U.S., Boras represented four of the market’s top clients. They all had to wait.

ESPN estimates that the remaining free agents could earn nearly a combined $1 billion. The bad news is that, according to Passan, they're “unlikely” to sign deals before the end of January. It’s entirely possible they will be unsigned by the time spring training begins.

The Rangers’ situation is made trickier as they wait to find out exactly how their 2024 local broadcast deal will be resolved. Diamond Sports Group is in bankruptcy and attempting to avoid paying all or some of the money it owes the Rangers, which could impact their potential pursuit of Montgomery.

That means the Rangers could be waiting longer to find out if they’ll sign Montgomery.
